About the song…

37,000′ is a song that I wrote in 2005. At the time, I was studying at York University in Toronto. I lived in Toronto for four years, but Vancouver always remained my home. Any chance I got I would fly home to Vancouver to visit friends and family and play shows with The Nautical Miles. This resulted in many trips across the prairies, usually late at night, cruising at an altitude of 37,000′.

Somehow, the four and a half hours between Pearson Airport and YVR was always a fertile writing time for me. I have done a lot of writing in the air, but this is the only complete song I wrote between landing and take-off. Appropriately, it is a song about flying.

Flying is an amazing experience. I think that we often forget that, especially those of us who fly often. This song is about those moments when we awaken from our disinterest and take full advantage of the amazing vantage our technologies have allowed. We are allowed an incredible perspective from 37,000′.

Oh, yes. It is also about how global climate change will ultimately result in another ice age.

About the artwork…

“From The Saskatchewan paintings which layer historical, geographical and fictional sources about a part of the world in which Mackenzie has never lived, but has visited, explored and researched as an exotic place”

Landon has been a friend of the Nautical Miles long before the Nautical Miles existed. She is the mother of one of our childhood friends.

Her paintings have always been awe inspiring to me. Whenever I fly and look down on the cities, towns, and highways below, I think of her Saskatchewan paintings. To me, they capture perfectly that amazing moment when the vastness of the prairies reveals itself to you.

When we were considering what art we wanted to accompany 37,000′ this image immediately came to mind. We are humbled, and very grateful that Landon agreed to let us use her painting.
